Tanaris is a terrestrial planet in Pegasus. It used to be inhabited by Ancients and perhaps old human cultures. The Ancients built a large shield powered by a geothermal power generator, but this facility lies in the giant caldera of a supervolcano which erupts every few hundred thousand years. The shield protects the humans living there from the Wraith.
the law of gravityIn 2006, the Atlantis Expedition makes First Contact with the Tanarians, the human population currently occupying this planet. The people here come from many planets and are, essentially, refugees from previous Cullings. They use the Ancient shield to protect a portion of their planet and their settlements, but not all, and lately the shield has been malfunctioning. There is also a hangar with an Ancient ship which the Tanarians are unable to fly, since none of their people possesses the ATA-gene.
Recon One tries to help them fix the Ancient technology of the energy plant when Dr McKay realizes that the facility sits in the middle of an active volcano and an eruption is imminent. The Tanarians have a hard time believing them, fearing the Lanteans are trying to take the Ancient technology for themselves, so Dr Weir goes to the planet to negotiate with the Chancellor. Tremors rock the planet, and the Tanarians have no choice to evacuate. Atlantis sends the Aurora and the Daedalus to get people out. Dr Weir evacuates to Atlantis with the Chancellor and several Tanarians through the Gate on foot right before the Gate is destroyed by a lava flow. The rest of the people outside of the Ancient shield are beamed aboard the Aurora and Daedalus, but many are inside of the facility, and the Daedalus cannot get a lock. Colonel Sheppard and Dr McKay gather the rest of the Tanarians and evacuate them aboard the Ancient Warship, riding the shockwave to get clear of the facility before making a brief hyperspace jump to orbit. The eruptions destroys the facility and the settlements, and an ash cloud surrounds the planet globally decreasing temperatures, making Tanaris unsuitable for habitation. Much flora and fauna dies because of the cataclysm. The Expedition lets the Taranians stay in Atlantis for some time while they help the Tanarians find a new planet to settle on. |
