Samantha "Sam" Carter is the daughter of Debra Carter and Air Force Major General Jacob Carter. She has a brother, Mark, who has two children, Lisa and David. Sam's mother died in 1980, when Carter was twelve. Carter joins the SGC in 1997 as a Captain of the US Air Force. She also has a PhD in astrophysics and quantum mechanics, which she earned at the Air Force Academy, and she is considered one of the smartest people within the SGC. She joins the SGC in 1995, shortly after the first Abydos mission, to study the Stargate. By 1997 she is one of the foremost expert on the Gate. Carter, O'Neill, Dr Daniel Jackson and Teal'c (one of the Jaffa and former First Prime of Anubis) forms the first off-world team, SG-1, in 1997, which she is a part of until 2005. For a while Jonas Quinn from Kelowna was part of the team. SG-1 is basically disbanded for a time after O'Neill leaves the SGC; Carter works aboard the Prometheus, Dr Jackson does offworld digs and research in the Mountain. In 2006 Colonel Cameron Mitchell, U.S. Air Force, puts the team back together, this time with Carter as its leader.

Carter along with Colonel Mitchell brings him, his son David and David's fiancée Laura Shannon to the SGC for their protection, while John Sheppard is recalled to Earth to take part in a murder investigation. Carter later works with Jackson and Gibbs' investigative team at NCIS to find Ba'al and interrogate him.
Carter goes offworld with Gibbs, Jackson and a team of marines (Stan, Lynn, Merrick) to PX6-209 and M91-555. On PX6-209 they find a cloning facility built by Ba'al, which the SGC orders must be destroyed. SG-1 is officially back on track in 2006, consisting of Colonel Mitchell, Teal'c and Dr Jackson, with Colonel Carter as its new leader. the law of gravityIn 2003, SG-1 assists with the rescue of another team trapped offworld on P3X-666. O'Neill is injured by a Jaffa staff weapon in the process.
When Anubis launches an attack force toward Earth, Carter and her team search for a weapon - presumably the Lost City of the Ancients - after O'Neill downloads the knowledge of the Ancients into his mind. They find the Weapons Platform Chair in Antarctica, in the Ancient Outpost there, and O'Neill launches hundreds of drones, destroying Anubis' fleet, but the Ancient knowledge overwhelms him and he is put in a stasis pod in the ice. After the Atlantis Expedition is launched and O'Neill given command of the SGC, and later gone to the Pentagon, Carter takes over SG-1 and eventually reassembles the team with Colonel Mitchell. She leads the new SG-1. |
