Balkan* is a planet inhabited by Pegasus humans. It is a center for trade and an old ally of the Athosians. Teyla introduces Balkan to the Atlantis Expedition when she joins them in 2004 CE. The Expedition regularly sends teams to Balkan to trade (including AR-1 and AR-3) and also find information, as Balkan is a hub for travelers of different kinds, and this is a way to hear news from different parts of the Galaxy.
It is one of the most peaceful and most populated worlds in Pegasus, with plenty of Gate activity and movement. It is considered an ally of the Atlantis Expedition. The planet has been Culled by the Wraith many times in its history, and like with most planets in Pegasus, its human population is always on alert in case of a sudden Culling. For this reason, the Balkans are initially wary of the Expedition, suspicious of strangers. It takes some time for these feelings to dissipate. we are the raven and the ghost | the descendantsWhen Teyla Emmagan is a child, her parents often take her offworld to learn how to trade, deal and negotiate. Balkan is the first world she visits outside of Athos, going there with her mother to trade Athosian furs for offworld spices. At one point she visits the Balkan markets with her father where he buys her a necklace, which later turns out to be a Wraith-made subspace tracking device, made to detect Ancients (or people with the ATA-gene).
After Athos is Culled in 2004 CE, rumors that the Athosians have come to live in the Ancestral City begin to spread. From Balkan the rumors reach other worlds, including a human inhabited planet lying in the Hyperspace path of the Wraith which are on their way to attack Atlantis during the Siege of Atlantis in 2005. However, very few people chose to believe the extraordinary rumors. this is the uprisingOne of the teams that has been to trade on Balkan is AR-3 (Tyler, Miller, Jenkins, Evans). After the Uprising, when senior staff of the Expedition are ordered to return to Earth, Lieutenant Tyler gives Lieutenant Ford a bottle of alcohol, "Balkan brew", which his team acquired from the Balkan markets.
Another team that has been there or elsewhere gotten their hands on alcohol brewed on Balkan is AR-4. The alcohol is strong and spicy, "harsh fiery stuff", and expensive too. elegeiaIn the mid- and late 1990s CE, the people of Atteria trade with Balkan, mainly for grain.
In 2005 CE, Runner Ronon Dex meets John Sheppard on Deserum and stuns him. Searching Sheppard's gear Ronon finds a Terran military knife, which he thinks would fetch a hefty sum on Balkan. nou ani atlantusIn 2005 CE, an ally on Balkan contacts the Lantean Alpha Site with news that Cowen of the Genii wants to talk with the Lanteans about negotiating a peace treaty.
AR-1 has gone to Balkan more than once. On one occasion, John Sheppard bought fabrics there to function as curtains in his quarters. |
