This planet is the Homeworld of the Genii, and was once the center of a great Coalition of planets under Genii control. The Coalition broke up hundreds of years ago because of the war with the Wraith.
The Genii are the descendants of a technologically quite advanced people, who left behind many underground structures which the Genii now use to live in and use for research and weapons development. In secret they try to develop atomic weapons to use against the Wraith, while keeping up a facade as simple farmers with a small population constantly living above ground, to trade with others worlds and such. One thing the Genii grow are tava beans. we are the raven and the ghostWhen the Atlantis Expedition meets them for the first time, Cowen is the leader of the Genii. He moves both above and below ground to keep up the facade of being farmers. The Genii have long traded with the Athosians, but never told them the truth. Teyla is friends with Sora of the Genii, and it is Teyla who introduces the Expedition to the Genii in 2004 CE. AR-1 (Sheppard, Ford, McKay and Teyla) demonstrate how to clear more land using C4, to yield larger crops so that they may be open to trade with Atlantis. However, Cowen sees the C4 as an opportunity to aid their weapons research.
Sheppard and McKay find an entrance to an underground bunker leading to a nuclear plant, and McKay figures out what the Genii are trying to do. AR-1 are apprehended but Sheppard makes a deal with Cowen to help them infiltrate a Wraith Hiveship in hibernation to steal a Wraith data device, which will help them track Hives in real time, to let them know where to plan their a-bombs. In return the Genii will trade with Atlantis, who promise not to reveal the true nature of the Genii. Sheppard, however, suspects subterfuge. The mission goes badly; they get the data devise, but one of the Genii, Sora's father, is killed. Sora blames Teyla for this, and this ends their friendship, starting fierce animosioty on Sora's part. Cowen blames the Lanteans for what went wrong and demands to have not just the data core, but the Puddlejumper and all of AR-1:s weapons and C4. Sheppard does not agree, and he has had two cloaked Jumpers (piloted by Markham and Gladys) reveal themselves in a firing position right above them. To avoid more bloodshed, Cowen reluctantly lets them go. Sheppard takes the Wraith data device. |
